Phillis Wheatley may be an unfamiliar name to you. Though, to anyone living in the 18th century, she was known as “the most famous African on the face of the earth.” Wheatley became the first published African American poet, and according to the famous, French writer, Voltaire, she ‘proved that black people could write poetry.’

She knew no shortage of hardship, having been snatched from her homeland to find herself hoisted upon the slave auction blocks of Boston, Ma. Yet amidst it all, she overcame great odds and demonstrated tremendous faith in her Savior, Christ Jesus. Wheatley became the first African American to publish a book and to make a living from her writing. And she did so for the glory of God.
