SUGGESTED READINGS
Chapter 1: Roles
For more on C. S. Lewis’s role as spiritual director and within the context of his own spiritual formation, read Lyle Dorsett’s wonderful text, Seeking the Secret Place: The Spiritual Formation of C. S. Lewis (Grand Rapids: Brazos, 2004).
Chapter 2: Gifts
For more on Phillis Wheatley and her outstanding poetry, see Vincent Caretta’s Phillis Wheatley: Complete Writings (New York: Penguin Classics, 2001).
Chapter 3: Desires
For more information about Harold J. Ockenga, consult Garth M. Rosell’s The Surprising Work of God (Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2008).
Chapter 4: Vision
There are several translations of Benedict’s Rule available to the modern day reader. In this book I have used The Rule of Saint Benedict, ed. Timothy Fry (New York: Vintage Books, 1998).
Chapter 5: Mission
An excellent resource which captures the mission and zeal of Adoniram Judson is Courtney Anderson’s To the Golden Shore: The Life of Adoniram Judson (Valley Forge, Penn.: Judson Press, 1987).
Chapter 6: Time
Jonathan Edwards’s Religious Affections is both readable and inspirational for the committed believer who wishes to study Edwards from the vantage point of personal spiritual vitality. See The Works of Jonathan Edwards, Vol. 2: Religious Affections, ed. John E. Smith (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2009).
Chapter 7: Trust
Two good biographies on William Wilberforce are Eric Metaxas’s Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery (New York: HarperCollins, 2007), and John Pollock’s Wilberforce (New York: St. Martin’s Press, 1977).
Chapter 8: Temple
For more information about Augustine, consider reading Henry Chadwick’s Augustine of Hippo: A Life (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2009).
Chapter 9: Treasure
The fascinating life of George Mueller can be explored in more detail by reading one of the following texts: A Narrative of Some of the Lord’s Dealing with George Muller, Written by Himself (Charleston, S.C.: BiblioBazaar, 2007), and George Mueller’s, Autobiography of George Mueller: A Million and a Half in Answer to Prayer, comp. G. Fred Bergin (Denton, Tex.: Westminster Literature Resources, 2003).
Chapter 10: Talent
For additional reflection on the life of Fanny Crosby, consult John Loveland’s Blessed Assurance: The Life and Hymns of Fanny J. Crosby (Nashville: Broadman, 1978), or Fanny Crosby’s autobiography Memories of Eighty Years (James H. Earle, 1906).
Chapter 11: Commitment to the Body of Christ
To know Calvin best, one must read his remarkable theological treatises, most notably his Institutes of the Christian Religion, trans. Ford Lewis Battles, 2 vols. (Louisville: Westminster John Knox Press, 2006).
Chapter 12: Spiritual Friendships
To better acquaint oneself with Wesley’s approach to building community, read D. Michael Henderson’s John Wesley’s Class Meeting: A Model for Making Disciples (Nappanee, Ind.: Evangel Publishing House, 1997).
